Afife – Sponsored by Kia
“If you wish to exist as a woman in this world, you must
burn. And while you burn, you must light the path for those who follow you,
sacrificing yourself.”
“Afife is a lighthouse-like beacon that has inspired
generations of theater people and brave women during dark times—a symbol of
rebellion against the system that forbade a woman from being on stage and in
the public eye. Filled with a passionate desire to exist on stage, Afife’s
story is reinterpreted here in a contemporary light.”
120 minutes, one act.
The play Afife is inspired by the life of Afife Jale
and tells the story of an imaginary theater company. It awaits you on April 2,
3, and 24 on the Turkcell Stage at Zorlu PSM.

“Lost Alphabet” – AHMET GÜNEŞTEKİN
Ahmet Güneştekin’s solo exhibition Lost Alphabet met
art enthusiasts on January 17 at ArtIstanbul Feshane.
Organized by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality with the
support of İBB Kültür, Lost Alphabet focuses on Güneştekin’s works that
connect his understanding of past events with contemporary issues by tracking
social continuities and ruptures. Curated by Christoph Tannert, the exhibition
brings together Güneştekin’s interdisciplinary works that integrate macro and
micro scales through memory and migration objects, sounds and images,
metafictional structures, and material interventions.
In the Lost Alphabet exhibition, visitors will
encounter installations made of objects that carry the concentrated memories of
people forced to change their geography or whose homeland has been
disrupted—thus focusing on personal and collective reckonings with painful
histories. The show also features video and sound works with micro-rhythmic
structures that expand the reference points of historical narratives.
Additionally, it presents the artist’s three-dimensional pieces, formed by
intervening in the micro components of found objects and transforming them into
unique personal encounters, as well as site-specific works created with stone
and metal forms, canvases that use mythological interpretations as a strategy,
divided ceramic pieces, and sculptures that highlight a tactile sense of
creation through the quilting (“kırkyama”) technique.
You can visit Ahmet Güneştekin’s Lost Alphabet at
ArtIstanbul Feshane until July 20.
Chiharu Shiota: Between Two Worlds
Chiharu Shiota’s solo exhibition Between Two Worlds,
realized by Istanbul Modern as part of the 100th anniversary of Japan–Turkey
diplomatic relations, centers on the artist’s sense of being “in between.”
While constructing the conceptual framework of the exhibition, Shiota is
inspired by Istanbul’s location between Asia and Europe. She also draws from
Istanbul Modern’s presence in Karaköy—one of the city’s most bustling and
historic port districts for centuries. Shiota forges a connection between the
ships docking at and departing from the harbor, the passengers traveling on
those ships, and her own migration story from Japan to Germany.
In her installation at Istanbul Modern, she fills the entire
gallery space with a web-like mass of red yarn and places suitcases within it,
emphasizing the theme of “existence within absence.” Red, the color she uses
most frequently, represents the blood flowing through veins and the circulation
of life, metaphorically linking people, emotions, and memories together.
This stunning exhibition runs through April 20, 2025. For
