Yves Saint Laurent, one of the legendary names of the fashion world, is remembered not only for his design talent, but also for his vision that changed the understanding of fashion. One of the 20th century’s most influential couturiers, Saint Laurent, has forever made his mark with the iconic designs he created throughout his career and his revolutionary approach to fashion.
Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent was born on August 1, 1936 in Algeria. After moving to Paris with his family, his interest in the fashion world was quickly recognised. At a young age, he began his formal training by attending the École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture Fashion School. Here, the foundations which shaped the vision of the fashion designer of the future were laid. He became a shining star at a very young age.
In the late 1950s, the young Yves Saint Laurent took a job as an intern at the famous fashion house Christian Dior. Meanwhile, he had the opportunity to work with important names such as Marc Bohan, chief designer of Christian Dior, and Gianfranco Ferré. However, following Dior’s sudden death, Saint Laurent took great responsibility and became Dior’s chief designer, even though he was only 21 years old. He attracted attention with his “Trapèze” collection and achieved success despite his young age.
In 1961, Yves Saint Laurent and his life partner Pierre Bergé declared their independence, founding the eponymous fashion house. Saint Laurent’s designs quickly became known for their modern and youthful style. Especially the women’s tuxedo design called “Le Smoking” revolutionised the fashion world. Saint Laurent, who shook the fashion world with this design that pushed the boundaries of gender, also came to the fore with its desire to bring luxury fashion to a wider audience.
In order to bring the world of luxury clothing to a wider audience, Yves Saint Laurent launched the ready-to-wear collection called “Rive Gauche”. This democratic step showed that luxury fashion, which was only accessible to the rich and elite,
could become accessible to a wider audience. This transformation affected not only the understanding of fashion, but also social and cultural dynamics. Rive Gauche, the more intellectual and bohemian left bank of Paris, impressed Monsieur Laurent .
Saint Laurent’s designs were inspired not only by the fashion world, but also by the world of art and culture. The “Mondrian Collection”, inspired by Mondrian’s abstract paintings, and the collections bearing the influences of African art
reflected his artistic approach. In this way, Saint Laurent, who sees fashion as a form of expression, started a new era by combining his designs with art.
Yves Saint Laurent’s life was marred not only by design and fashion, but also by personal challenges. Harmful habits such as drug and alcohol addiction affected his focus on his design career. Nonetheless, despite all these difficulties, Saint Laurent’s legacy and influence still lives on in the fashion world. The fashion house named after Saint Laurent, who died on June 1, 2008, continues to produce important designs today. With the acquisition of the brand by the Kering Group in 1999,Tom Ford became the head of the creative team and continued to work until 2004. In 2002, Mister Laurent held his last couture fashion show, citing the reasons for his health, and said goodbye to his profession forever. Today, Anthony Vaccarello is the creative director of the brand.
Yves Saint Laurent will be remembered not only as a part of the fashion world, but also as a force that transformed the fashion world.
