Facelift Surgery: But at What Age?
What Is the Best Age for a Facelift?
A facelift is a unique plastic surgery procedure that corrects and improves signs of aging in the face and neck.
Through surgery, sagging in the face can be lifted, and the overall appearance of the face and neck can be rejuvenated. Combining a facelift with other procedures—such as blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), neck lift, or skin resurfacing treatments—can also provide full facial rejuvenation and maximize results.
There is a common misconception that “you have to be very old for a facelift.” This article aims to clarify that false belief.
So, what is the best age for facelift surgery?
What Is the Ideal Age for a Facelift?
You can comfortably enjoy the results of a facelift for 7–10 years. For that reason, the ideal time for a first facelift is usually mid-40s to early 50s, followed by a secondary “refresh” facelift in the mid-60s.
Am I Too Young or Too Old for a Facelift?
The decision to undergo a facelift is highly personal. While advising patients, we consider both their goals and the actual condition of their skin. Even among people of the same age, many factors influence the skin’s “genetic age.”
However, if you are over 40 and starting to consider a facelift, it’s better not to wait too long. Women in their mid-40s to early 50s typically achieve the best, longest-lasting results due to having adequate skin elasticity.
A typical facelift result lasts 7–10 years. This makes the mid-40s to early 50s ideal for a first facelift. A secondary “refresh” facelift is often recommended in the mid-60s.
Men generally begin seeking facelifts in their early 50s or 60s.
Which Procedures Suit Which Age Group?
Based on our extensive experience in aesthetic plastic surgery and non-surgical facial rejuvenation, here are general guidelines on which treatments may work for your age and facial condition:
Approximate Age: 35+
Although facelifts at this age are uncommon, several non-surgical treatments can refresh your appearance or help maintain a youthful contour:
- Dermal Fillers
- Botox for softening mild wrinkles and frown lines
- Lip Fillers to reduce fine lip lines, smooth the area, and restore volume
- Microneedling to refine skin texture and reduce scarring
- Chemical Peels to treat fine lines, acne scars, enlarged pores, uneven pigmentation, and sun damage
- Dermabrasion to soften wrinkles and fine lines
Approximate Age: 40+
As a general rule, patients who choose facelift surgery in their early to mid-40s tend to enjoy better and longer-lasting results than those who wait.
How Do Facelift Procedures Work?
A facelift or neck lift is ideal for addressing sagging cheeks, jawline laxity, and midface descent. One of the biggest advantages of these procedures is that they offer long-lasting results—typically 10 to 15 years—with minimal need for revision.
Fat Grafting
This procedure uses your own body fat to restore facial volume. It is ideal for filling hollows, enhancing youthful contours, and increasing fullness for a fresher look.
Age: 50+
If you did not undergo a facelift in your late 40s, you can absolutely have one in your 50s.
If you already had a facelift earlier in life, a secondary facelift in the mid-60s typically provides exceptional results.
