As one of the most respected names in the fashion world, Christian Dior is a brand that I’m sure almost everyone knows as Dior today. But how much do we know about the story of the brand’s French-born fashion designer?
Gaining worldwide fame with his brand, which is a symbol of luxury and elegance, and being considered as one of the most important fashion icons of the 20th century, Dior played a major role in the formation of the sense of contemporary fashion.
Christian Dior was born on January 21, 1905, in Granville, France. His father had a family-owned chemistry company in Paris. The “Dior”s were coming from a wealthy and respectable family. Dior, who was interested in painting in his youth, attended the École des Sciences Politiques in 1928 and studied political science. His parents wanted him to be a diplomat, but Dior always had only art on his mind. His artistic works coming true with a certain amount of money he received from his father in 1928 prove this. The period in which Christian Dior lived was not politically permissive of art. World Wars and polarizations caused this big figure to worry about the future. Despite the opposition of his family, he could not resist his interest in fashion, turned to fashion design, and initially started working at the Dubois fashion house.
When Dior gathered all his courage and founded his own fashion house in 1946, he created a huge revolution in the fashion world. Despite the grey and dull mood of the post-World War II depression era, Dior’s creations offered women a hopeful and elegant perspective. His famous collection, called New Look, made a big impact in the fashion world with its silhouette consisting of long skirts, a wide skirt line, a fitting top, and a corset that tightens the waist.
With this collection shaking the fashion world, Dior became one of the most prominent fashion designers of those days. Analyzing and understanding the consumers’ psychology very well, his brand grew rapidly and became a pioneer in the world of haute couture. Over time, Dior also started to offer a wide range of products in different areas such as perfumes, accessories, bags, and cosmetics. When those times came, rather than just the clothes, the brand was offering a lifestyle. He had an emotional connection with and he was inspired by the places he lived, the places he visited, and the architecture surrounding him, and reflected those places and architecture in his products.
Unfortunately, Christian Dior suddenly passed away mysteriously in 1957 after the brightest period of his career. Today, there are various claims about his cause of death, but the exact cause has still not been proven. In his short life of 52 years, he was able to accomplish very important works, even though everything was negative during his lifetime. However, his legacy still has a profound impact on the fashion world. The Dior brand is driven by leading designers and creative directors such as Yves Saint Laurent and John Galliano and continues to progress without compromising its quality and aesthetics. Christian Dior has made a great contribution to the fashion world with his elegance, aesthetics, and innovative designs. His significant legacy shows that creativity and bravery are of great importance in the world of fashion.
