The eye area is one of the places where human aging is most evident. When someone asks me, "Tell me how old I am," my attention is immediately drawn to that person's eyes. I can often predict the correct year or even a few years ahead (which means the aging rate is faster than age).

The eye is one of our most important senses for recognizing and understanding this physical world and one of the most important organs that make up our facial expressions. It transmits our feelings to the other person. In short, it is one of our most important communication tools by which we express ourselves while socializing. But unfortunately, time and experience can affect the eye and its environment, deforming it. Mainly after age 35, the drooping and bags of the eyelids cause a different expression on our faces. This situation can cause us to look further than we are.

How? By looking more tired, tense, or older than we actually are.

Why do bags develop on the eyelids?

Apart from genetic factors, aging, an intense work schedule, stress, sleep disorders, and alcohol and cigarette consumption can cause bags in the eye area.

Combined with factors such as excessive computer and cell phone use due to fast-paced life and lack of sleep, the problem of drooping upper eyelids, unfortunately, overlaps almost precisely with that of people in this modern world and the expression we see when we look at the mirror with a drooping eyelid makes us unhappy.

Even though the underlying causes are the ones I listed above, you should know that once our eyelids droop and bulge, there is no turning back.

WHO IS SUITABLE FOR UPPER EYELID TREATMENT?

To answer this question, I can say that anyone who complains of drooping eyelids and sagging eyelids results from the above damaging factors. But there are a few more details that I, as a plastic surgeon, pay attention to when planning eyelid aesthetics.

Your eyebrow distance, the height of your eyebrow if you already have a droopy eyelid, and if that eyebrow is low or drooping, you must add an eyebrow suspension to your surgery.

Upper eyelid surgery alone will not change your eyebrow height.

The condition of your eyelids, a droopy eyelid, a baggy eyelid is another problem, low eyelid is another problem. Upper eyelid correction for the issue of lower eyelids does not correct this problem. On the contrary, it can increase it.

Fat does not leak from every upper eyelid bulge; sometimes, the fatty tissue melts and settles asymmetrically, creating a notch in your upper eyelid. In this case, it is necessary to add fat instead of removing it.

Our eyelids stick to our eye bone ball as a tendon on the outer edge. This tendon loosens as we age, causing the corners of our eyes to point downward (think of a young and fresh eye, the corner of your eye is slightly upward with a curve). In such cases, in addition to eyelid surgery, you may need tonsillectomy (canthopexy), which you hear about in public.

The condition of your lower eyelids, the eye area is not just the upper eyelid area, but also the lower eyelid area is a part of your eye area. If your upper eyelid is accompanied by a severely sagging lower eyelid problem, we cannot achieve the desired youth and relaxation with upper eyelid surgery alone. Therefore, doing both the upper and lower eyelids together may be necessary.

And yes, the face is a whole. Sometimes the whole face needs rejuvenation.

Now let us get to the details and procedures of the surgery...

What is the preparation before the surgery?

As with any surgery, we stop taking blood thinners like aspirin a week before. We also do not want you to take herbal teas during this time. During our consultation, we will ask you if you have any chronic conditions, such as high blood pressure in your eyes. If available, we will prepare you for the surgery with a compliance report from the doctor in charge.

So how do we perform the surgery?

In this surgery, we remove excess skin tissue that causes sagging and bags under the eyes, we remove part of the eye muscle around the eyes and make the eye area look more recovered, and if our patient has herniated fat tissue (or we add it if not), we partially remove these fat pads.

Of course, every procedure is essential, but upper eyelid surgery takes relatively less time than other surgeries. You will not feel any pain or discomfort during and after the procedure.

What do we have to take care of after the surgery?

After surgery, we tape the area where we sutured. These tapes are essential to prevent edema. The application of ice after surgery is necessary to calm the trauma. Swelling or slight bruising may occur in some structures around the eyes. This is normal.

We recommend protecting the area where the stitches were removed from trauma and water for the first week. After the stitches are removed, you can take a short shower. Again, you should sleep with two pillows under your head for the first week and avoid activities that tilt your head forward.

What kind of result do we get after the surgery?

By removing the excess on the eyelids, the eye and its surroundings appear clearer. Keeping the harmony of the eye expression with the eyebrow ensures that the person looks younger than their age. Those who see you after the surgery notice the pleasant energy of the expression around your eyes.

How long does the procedure take?

It lasts, on average, 45-60 minutes and is performed under local or general anesthesia.

Are the results of cosmetic upper eyelid surgery permanent?

Yes, you can enjoy the results of your upper eyelid surgery for years.

Will there be any scars left after the surgery?

There will be vague scars. These scars are located within your eyelid crease and are not visible. The slight redness that occurs initially will fade over time. You must use sunscreen during the day.

What happens after the surgery?

After eyelid surgery, the patient returns to everyday life immediately. Edema and possible slight bruising, which do not affect daily life, pass quickly. The stitches are removed at the check-up one week later.

What is the effectiveness?

The procedure's effectiveness lasts for years, but slight loosening may occur over the years.

Combined Treatment

We can perform this surgery alone or as part of a facial rejuvenation procedure. Then we add the options that best suit the patient, such as eyebrow suspension, lower eyelid aesthetics, or a facelift. May our eyes always look with love...
